Chapter 3. When Respect Disappears
The young man stepped closer. “You shouldn’t even be out in public like this,” he said.
“You’re a mess.” My jaw tightened. I started to stand. But before I could speak, the young man did something no one expected.
He raised his hand and struck my father across the face. The sound was sharp. Final. My father’s cap fell to the floor.
He collapsed back into the booth, stunned, one hand pressed to his cheek.
No one moved. No one spoke.
The diner was frozen in disbelief.
Chapter 4. The Moment I Spoke
I stood slowly. Not yelling. Not rushing. Just standing. “That was an assault,” I said calmly.
The young man scoffed. “Mind your business.”
The waitress had already reached for the phone.
Other customers were standing now. Not aggressive. Just present. Watching.
Chapter 5. Accountability Arrives
The diner manager stepped forward.
“You need to leave,” she said firmly. “Now.” The young man laughed — until he realized no one was laughing with him.
Phones were out. Witnesses were watching. Sirens approached outside.
